Environment

In 2019, Wales became the first country in the world to declare a climate emergency. This has since been followed by a declaration of a nature emergency.

It is beyond doubt that human activity is leading to global climate change, and that all of us can play in rising to this challenge.

Since being elected, I have had the pleasure of meeting the people and groups that are working hard to improve our local environment for current and future generations.

21.05.25 Kilvey Hill, Swansea

Swansea residents are worried they’re going to lose access to Kilvey Hill when the new Skyline attraction is built. Welsh Government money has gone into the project, so I was disappointed to hear the minister deflect residents’ concerns on to the council and developers.

06.05.25 - Wildlife Trust and the Swansea Canal Society

Sioned Williams MS meets the team at North Wales Wildlife Trust who have been working with Swansea Canal Society to combat invasive species.

19.10.24 - International Repair Day

On International Repair Day it was great to visit Pontardawe Repair Cafe / Caffi Trwsio and see how the wonderful volunteers are helping residents of Pontardawe save money and save the planet by fixing everything from lamps, vacuum cleaners and printers to jewellery, clothes and toys. A fantastic way also to bring the community together for a coffee and a chat. A huge diolch to everyone involved!

26.04.24 - Visit Derwen Recycling, Neath Abbey

I had the opportunity to visit Derwen, local recycling and waste management company based in Neath Abbey. It was fascinating to visit their site and hear about the way the waste is collected, sorted, processed and re-purposed for a wide variety of uses. Businesses like this are an essential part of the future of waste management, and are an excellent example of the circular economy in action. Thank you to Julian and Christian for the tour of the site, and for chief executive Mark Davies, and directors Debbie Keogh and Stuart Hanford for telling me more about the history and vision for Derwen.

08.03.24 - Aberafan Beach Clean

Earlier today, my team and I joined staff at TaiTarian, as well as many local residents on a litter pick along Aberafan Beach. The sun was shining and many bags of litter were collected. Aberafan Beach is so beautiful and very much loved by the community, so it was great to see so many come out to keep it clean, tidy and safe.

14.02.24 - Forward4Fairyland Community clean up

It was a pleasure for my team and I to join the excellent people of Forward4Fairyland for their community clean up today. Despite the weather, there was a great turn out from local town and county borough councillors, representatives from a number of supportive organisations, and local residents. Thanks to Forward4Fairyland for the invitation and I hope the afternoon fun day went well!

20.12.23 - Visit to Glantawe Riverside Park,  Pontardawe

I recently spent the morning with Gail at the Glantawe Riverside Park in Pontardawe to see their wonderful outdoors educational programme in action. I was concerned after I was contacted by a constituent who was upset that his granddaughter's school would not be visiting to the centre from now on due to lack of funding and he expressed how much all the children had enjoyed and benefitted from the opportunities provided by the centre in previous years. Gail confirmed that funding cuts were of great concern and that many local schools were now in a similar position and were stopping utilising the site. We discussed some of the valuable projects that they offer.I will be doing my best to help support the centre and ensure this valuable and beautiful local resource remains accessible to all the local communityCollage of images of Sioned at Riverside

04.08.23 - Supporting the residents of Clyne

I visited Clyne Common in West Cross, Swansea again- an important local heathland site which is under threat – to hear residents’ concerns about an application to deregister it as common land to allow the planned development to go ahead. It was a bit warmer then last December thankfully and a great opportunity to see all the wonderful wildlife that needs to be protected.

Well done to Laura Santiago, My Green Valley and all the other volunteers who made it happen.

I visited Gowerton this week to meet local residents concerned about planning developments at Fairwood Terrace. I heard about how they feel that this a much loved green space which is home to wildlife and they also feel they need answers regarding their concerns about the traffic access to this area, the risk of flooding, and the pressure on infrastructure and local services.

28.07.22 - Hwb y Gors

Many thanks to Dan and Emily from Awel Aman Tawe for showing me how the fantastic Hwb y Gors project is taking shape. The potential of this new zero carbon arts education and enterprise centre in Cwmgors is so exciting and the way the former school has been reimagined for the benefit of the local community and the wider area is truly inspirational. It was also good to discuss the importance of active school travel with Roger Dutton of Sustrans who was also being given the tour this morning!

19.07.22 - Visit to Bee 1

It was a pleasure to meet Mark Douglas and Amy Brown of Bee 1 to hear about Our Climate Classroom, the UK's first climate change education programme, created and produced in Neath Port Talbot. This fantastic initiative provides schools with a package of digital lessons, teacher resources and experiments for learners.
When speaking about this programme, Mark's passion for sustainability and for Wales was undeniable. While many schools have already benefited from the programme, he wants all children and young people in Wales to have an opportunity to learn about climate change and how they can make a real difference.
