“If we don’t come together to save venues like this, we’re losing more than just a building” - Sioned Williams MS
Local Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd, Sioned Williams MS, has leant her support to the Neath Little Theatre’s campaign to raise funds for essential restoration work.
Ms Williams visited the theatre this week after hearing about the campaign to save the building.
Neath Little Theatre was established in 1935 and should be in the process of planning its 90th birthday celebrations for next year. However, following a recent building survey that recommended temporary closure, trustees are now looking at ways to fund essential restoration work that has been estimated to cost in excess of £200,000.
Sioned Williams MS, Plaid Cymru Member of Senedd for South Wales West, said:
“This historic and unique facility is not just a venue for regular performances, it is a thriving and supportive community that brings the arts to the people of Neath. If this theatre were to be unable to fund the restoration, this would be a massive loss to the local community, so I am fully supportive of their efforts to overcome this crisis and come back stronger.
“We have so much to be proud of in Neath, and the Neath Little Theatre is part of our rich and varied heritage. It’s not just the award-winning productions, it’s the opportunities afforded to the local community to get involved in so many different activities. If we don’t come together to save venues like this, we’re losing more than just a building.”
Janet Francis Jones, a long-time member of the Neath Little Theatre, said:
“For the last 90 years our aim has been to foster a sense of community, a love of the arts and to bring drama and learning opportunities to the people of Neath and surrounding area. We are immensely proud of our theatre, our patrons, loyal supporters and dedicated team of volunteers, but we need help to ensure we can re-open our doors and continue to provide quality theatre to the community for the next 90 years.”
